I have to sing praises to Dr. Ed Suh and his hygientist Shannon Carroll. We had trauma to my daughters front tooth on a Sunday afternoon and they met us at the office and made her feel so comfortable. What could have been a traumatic experience was met with calmness and reassurance. Thank you so much!!

Do you know what dental implants are in Wake Forest?

dental implants are in Wake Forest

The crown of a tooth is the white visible part, and what lies beneath the gumline is the root, extending down into the jawbone. A dental implant is a replacement for the root portion of a lost tooth, and is secured in the jawbone the same way as a tooth root. An implant restoration consists of the implant itself, the connector (abutment), and the denture or dental crown attached by the abutment.

An implant is usually made of titanium, the same material most orthopedic replacements such as hip and knee, joints are made of. Titanium is lightweight, strong, durable, biocompatible, and has the ability to fuse with the bone in a process called osseointegration. Researchers are working on perfecting implants made of zirconium, but they are not widely used yet.

Osseointegration takes place when the cells in the bone directly attach themselves to the surface of the implant. This incredible process of osseointegration was serendipitously discovered by a Swedish research professor on the 1950s. Extensive research and development followed, resulting in the highly predictable restoration they are today; modern implants have a 95% success rate.

People have always understood the importance of replacing missing teeth; archaeologists have found evidence of attempts at implants dating back to ancient civilizations. Historically implants have been attempted with gold, iron, seashells, gemstones, animal teeth, and even human teeth. However, it wasn’t until the discovery of the properties of titanium that an implant procedure became predictably successful.

Even today, precautions must be taken to ensure the success of the procedure. The quality of the materials and the skill of the providers can make the difference in implant success or failure. The key is making sure the surgery is done well, and the technique is pristine. We work hand in hand with one of the finest surgeons of the East Coast, so we can make sure the implant procedure will have optimal results.
