Dentist in Raleigh, NC describes the benefits of sleep dentistry

Dr. Edmond Suh at Supremia Dentistry describes the benefits of sleep dentistry in Raleigh, NC area

Dr. Edmond Suh and his team at Supremia Dentistry work with patients daily who have dental anxiety. It is something patients should not be ashamed of. Instead, patients should be open and honest about their dental anxieties so they can learn more about the benefits of sleep dentistry. Our dentist in the Raleigh, NC area is pleased to offer sleep dentistry to allow patients to have a positive experience every time they visit Supremia Dentistry.

What is sleep dentistry?

Sleep dentistry, also known as sedation dentistry, is a method of helping patients feel at ease in the dentist’s chair by helping them feel relaxed. This is achieved with special sedation methods. At our practice, we utilize oral conscious sedation. This is a method of sedation that is achieved with a prescription medication that patients take approximately one hour prior to their appointment. The medication takes time to work, so patients need to arrange transportation to and from the dental office as they should not be driving during this time. The medication will make the patient feel at ease and completely relaxed. By the time they get to the office for their appointment, they may find that they fall asleep. Some patients are awake and coherent, but once they arrive home to rest until the sedation wears off, they do not have any memory of the appointment – but their dental work is complete! This is a great way to have extensive dental procedures performed for patients with anxieties.

Is sleep dentistry safe?

Yes! With sleep dentistry, patients can get appointments in without feeling anxious or nervous about dental work. The dentist can work quickly and efficiently to complete the procedure, allowing patients to get back home to rest and heal. Patients love the ability to have treatments completed and no recollection of the visit – ensuring a happy patient every time!

Who is a candidate for sleep dentistry?

Most patients can undergo oral conscious sedation without an issue. We do encourage patients to provide us with their medical history and any drug allergies they may have to ensure they are able to take the oral medication safely. We also advise patients to arrange transportation for their appointment as they should not be driving a vehicle while they have the oral conscious sedation in their system. By following these safety precautions, patients can enjoy treatments without anxiety.

What are the benefits of sleep dentistry?

Sleep dentistry with oral conscious sedation is:

  • Safe
  • Effective
  • Long-lasting
  • Affordable
  • Simple to request
  • Best for anxious patients

What other methods of sedation are available at Supremia Dentistry?

Dr. Edmond Suh describes What other methods of sedation are available at Supremia Dentistry in Raleigh, NC area

Currently, oral conscious sedation is the only sedative available to our patients in our practice. To obtain it, patients need to have a separate appointment with our dental team prior to their treatment. This is because the medication needs to be prescribed by the dentist, picked up at the pharmacy by the patient, and then taken approximately one hour prior to their dental appointment to be effective. For patients who are having same day appointments, we often provide local anesthetics for pain and may be unable to provide sedation at the same time. We encourage patients to ask about sleep dentistry if they have any level of dental anxieties which may make it difficult for them to get their dental work done.

What about anesthetics?

We want all procedures to be pain-free, so we offer anesthetics which are either topical or injected. This ensures that patients do not feel anything while we perform our procedures. Anesthetic is different from sedation, as sedation deals with anxiety while anesthetics are related to pain and discomfort. However, with a combination of both, patients can enjoy visiting the dentist!

At Supremia Dentistry in Wake Forest, NC, patients have access to the best options for sleep dentistry, including oral conscious sedation. There are many benefits to treatment, and we encourage patients in and around the area of Raleigh, NC to book an appointment by calling 919 556 6200.
