Our team at Supremia Dentistry has many years of experience with dental veneers to improve the look of your smile. In the following article, we’ll address some of the Frequently Asked Questions that we receive about dental veneers.

What is a dental veneer?

Veneers are facings that are attached to the front of a tooth to alter its size, shape or color. They are thin shells of porcelain, a material that mimics tooth enamel. Veneers are custom fabricated so that they blend in seamlessly with the rest of the teeth in your mouth.

What are dental veneers used for?

At Supremia Dentistry, we love recommending dental veneers to our patients because they are so versatile. Dental veneers are used to accomplish several things including:

  • Closing the gap between teeth with too much space.
  • Covering permanent discoloration that cannot be fixed with teeth whitening.
  • Lengthening the appearance of a tooth or teeth that are too short.
  • Covering cracks or fractures in teeth.

Your comfort is our first concern.

What is the dental veneer procedure?

Raleigh area patients who visit Supremia Dentistry for veneers will begin by having impressions taken of the teeth. These impressions are sent to a lab for creation of the veneers. Veneers are custom fabricated to match the color, shape, and size of your teeth.

To make room for the veneers, the dentist will need to prepare the teeth by removing a thin layer of the enamel. This is done so that when the veneers are adhered to the teeth, they will be flat. Once the enamel is removed, a temporary veneer will be attached to the tooth to protect it while waiting for the final product. Patients should take special care to brush lightly and avoid eating hard or crunchy foods that could cause the temporary veneer to move out of place.

When your final product is ready, you will return to the office so that the veneers can be attached. Before this is done, the dentist will remove the temporary veneers and check the fit of the permanent ones. Small adjustments can be made at this time. Once the dentist is satisfied with the fit and appearance of the final veneers, they will be permanently bonded to the front of the teeth.

What is the recovery after receiving dental veneers?

Recovery after receiving dental veneers in Raleigh area

Immediately following the procedure, you may notice that your teeth feel sore for a couple of days. This is completely normal and can be managed with over the counter pain medication and a cold compress for swelling. We recommend that patients eat soft foods for a few days.

How do I take care of dental veneers?

When properly cared for, dental veneers can last patients for up to 15 years. There are several things you can do to extend the lifespan of your veneers:

  • Practice excellent oral hygiene – Brush twice a day and floss daily to prevent decay in the natural tooth behind the veneer.
  • Regular dental visits – Patients should still visit the dentist twice a year for check-ups and professional cleaning.
  • Avoid chewing on hard objects – This includes using your teeth as tools to open packages. Using your teeth to bite down on any hard object can potentially cause veneers to break.
  • Wear protection – If you engage in physical or contact sports, a mouthguard should be worn to protect the teeth.

Dental veneers are an excellent solution to cover imperfections with your teeth and dramatically enhance the appearance of the smile. If you are in the Raleigh, NC area, call Supremia Dentistry today to find out if veneers are right for you. We’ve helped thousands of patients feel confident in their smiles with cosmetic treatments like veneers.
